Aboriginal Culture and Spirituality

A new discussion resource, Aboriginal Spirituality & Culture: A Conversation with Revd Dr Garry Worete Deverell, offers a thoughtful entry point for parishes, study groups, and individuals ready to explore their understanding of Aboriginal perspective and experience.

Garry, a Trawloolway man and Anglican theologian, succinctly describes Aboriginal understandings of Country, the Dreaming, and the impact of colonisation on land and First Peoples.

The resource includes a three-part video series and an 11-page discussion guide designed for group reflection. Each session is grounded in First Peoples’ ways of seeing and invites Second Peoples into respectful conversation and practical next steps.

Themes include:

  • Living on Country: Country as kin, not commodity.
  • The Dreaming: Stories that teach sustainable, sacred life.
  • Country & Colonisation: An alternative experience of the “pioneer” narrative.

This study is a call to relationship—with First Peoples, with the land itself, and with the Spirit of reconciliation already present in both.
